Can You Change Your Direct Deposit Bank Account Online?
A Practical Banking Guide
Moving your paycheck to a new bank account can be straightforward, but the timing and verification steps matter. A little preparation can help you avoid a missed payment or an unexpected deposit delay.
Can You Change Your Direct Deposit Bank Account Online?
Yes, in many cases, you can change your direct deposit bank account online. If you have opened a new checking account, switched banks, or want your paycheck sent somewhere else, your employer may let you update the details through an employee or payroll portal. People receiving Social Security or other government benefits generally need to make the change through the relevant agency’s authorized service.
The process depends on who sends your payment. You may need your new bank’s routing number and account number, along with identity verification. A change submitted shortly before payday may miss the current payroll cutoff, so your next payment could still go to your previous account.
Before switching, confirm the new account details and keep your old account open until the first deposit reaches the new one. For a wider understanding of payment methods and processing, explore our Bank Transfers and Payments guide.

Changing Your Employer Paycheck
Many employers let workers update direct deposit details through an HR or payroll portal. Sign in through your official employee account, find the payment settings, and follow the verification instructions. Your employer may also require approval or a payroll form before the change becomes active.
Changing Social Security Benefits
People receiving Social Security retirement, survivors, or disability benefits can generally update their bank details through a personal my Social Security account. SSI recipients generally need to contact the Social Security Administration to change direct deposit information.
Changing an IRS Tax Refund Deposit
Tax refund banking details are usually entered when you file your tax return. Once the return is posted, you generally cannot change those details unless the IRS provides an eligible option, such as a CP53E notice that allows an online update within the stated deadline.
Important: Use the official employer or government website for every update. Never share your banking password or one-time security code with someone claiming to help change your deposit details.
How to Change Direct Deposit Online: Step by Step
If your employer offers online payroll updates, you can often change your paycheck destination through its employee portal. Before starting, check your payroll deadline so you know whether the new details can apply to your next payment.
Step 1: Prepare Your New Bank Account Details
Confirm that your new account is open and eligible to receive ACH deposits. Get the correct routing number and account number from your bank’s official app, website, or account documents. Check that you are using the details for the correct account type.
Step 2: Sign In to Your Employer’s Payroll Portal
Visit your employer’s official HR or payroll website. Look for options such as Direct Deposit, Payment Settings, Pay Information, or Banking Details. Menu names vary by payroll provider.
Step 3: Enter and Review the New Details
Add the new routing number, account number, and account type. If your employer supports split direct deposits, check how much of your paycheck will go into each account before continuing.
Step 4: Complete Verification and Submit
Follow any identity or account verification instructions. Review every digit before submitting the request, then save the confirmation or reference number if provided.
Step 5: Confirm When the Change Takes Effect
Ask payroll which paycheck will use the new details. Check your paystub and both accounts after payday. Keep the old account open until the first deposit reaches the new account and outstanding payments or withdrawals have been settled.
Security tip: Make changes only through your employer’s verified portal. For more precautions, read our guide to using online banking safely. Never share your banking password or one-time security code.
Benefits and Drawbacks of Changing Direct Deposit Online
Changing your direct deposit online can simplify a bank switch, but convenience does not guarantee an immediate update. The benefits and limitations depend on your employer’s payroll system or the agency sending your payment.
Benefits of Changing Direct Deposit Online
- Convenience: Update your bank details through an online portal without visiting a branch or submitting paper forms when digital updates are available.
- Easy access: You can often submit the request from home and review your details before sending it.
- Confirmation records: Some payroll systems provide a submission confirmation or effective date, making it easier to track your request.
Drawbacks to Consider
- Limited online options: Some employers or payment agencies require a paper form or direct assistance from their payroll or benefits department.
- Processing delays: Payroll cutoff dates can cause a payment to go to your old account even after you submit the change.
- Errors and fraud risks: Incorrect account details or phishing messages pretending to come from HR can put your payment or banking information at risk.
Practical tip: Save your change confirmation, verify the first deposit in your new account, and keep enough money in your old account to cover pending payments. The CFPB’s checking-account switching guide also recommends tracking deposits and automatic withdrawals during the transition.
Payroll Portal vs. Bank Switching Service vs. Paper Form
You may be able to change your direct deposit details in three ways. Each method works differently, and availability depends on your employer, payroll provider, and bank.
| Method | How It Works | Best For | Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Employer Payroll Portal | You sign in to your employer’s official system and enter the new bank details. | Employees with online payroll access. | Payroll deadlines may delay the update. |
| Bank Switching Service | A participating bank may connect with a supported payroll provider or help prepare an update form. | Customers whose bank and payer support the service. | Availability and employer acceptance vary. |
| Paper Authorization Form | You complete the required form and submit it to HR or payroll, sometimes with a voided check or bank letter. | Employees without an online update option. | Manual processing and verification may take additional time. |
Which method should you choose? Start with your employer’s official payroll portal if it supports direct deposit updates. If not, ask HR whether a bank switching service or paper form is accepted. Before relying on the new account, confirm that the change was approved and ask which paycheck will use the updated details.
Processing Time, Risks, Security and Expert Tips
Changing your direct deposit bank account online is not always immediate. Even after submitting your new details, your next paycheck may still go to your previous account if payroll has already reached its processing deadline.
How Long Does a Direct Deposit Change Take?
Many employers process direct deposit changes within one or two pay cycles, but the timeline varies. Payroll cutoff dates, account verification, and your employer’s processing schedule determine when the update takes effect. Ask HR or payroll to confirm the effective date and which paycheck will use the new account.
Risks to Watch For
- Incorrect routing or account numbers can delay or misdirect a payment.
- Missing the payroll cutoff may send your next paycheck to the old account.
- Closing the old account too early can affect pending checks, deposits, or automatic withdrawals.
- Fake HR emails, texts, or login pages can expose your banking information.
Expert Tips for a Safer Bank Account Switch
- Update details only through your employer’s verified payroll portal or an officially approved process.
- Double-check the routing number and account number before submitting.
- Save the confirmation and monitor both accounts until the first successful deposit reaches the new account.
- Keep enough money in the old account to cover outstanding checks and scheduled withdrawals until they are settled.
For additional protection, review our bank account security checklist and learn how to set up bank transaction alerts.
The CFPB’s account-switching guidance also recommends tracking deposits and withdrawals and keeping enough money in the old account during the transition.
Common Mistakes When Changing Direct Deposit
A rushed direct deposit change can lead to delayed paychecks, missed bills, or unexpected bank fees. Avoid these common mistakes when switching accounts:
- Closing the old account too early: Pending checks, scheduled withdrawals, or another deposit may still use your previous account.
- Entering incorrect bank details: A wrong routing or account number can cause a deposit to be delayed or rejected. Contact payroll immediately if you notice an error.
- Missing the payroll cutoff: A request submitted after processing begins may not affect your next paycheck.
- Assuming everything updates automatically: Opening a new bank account does not automatically change your employer’s payroll instructions or other payment arrangements.
- Forgetting recurring transactions: Update utility bills, credit-card payments, subscriptions, insurance premiums, and other automatic withdrawals linked to the old account.
Real-Life Example: Jordan Changes Banks
Imagine Jordan submits his new bank details on Friday, after his employer has already processed payroll. His upcoming paycheck may still go to his old account. Jordan keeps that account open, confirms the effective date with payroll, and checks where his paycheck arrives. He also moves his automatic bill payments and waits for outstanding transactions to clear. Only after confirming that deposits and withdrawals are using the new account does he transfer the remaining balance and close the old one.
Remember: A successful bank switch involves more than redirecting your paycheck. Track every deposit and withdrawal until the transition is complete.
For a safe transition, follow the CFPB’s checking account switching checklist.
Who Can Change Direct Deposit Online?
Several types of payment recipients may be able to update their direct deposit details online. However, the available method depends on the employer, government agency, pension plan, or other organization sending the payment.
- Employees: Workers can update paycheck details through their employer’s HR or payroll portal if online changes are supported.
- Social Security beneficiaries: People receiving retirement, survivors, or disability benefits can generally update bank details through my Social Security. SSI recipients cannot currently make this change through the online service and should contact SSA for assistance.
- Unemployment benefit recipients: Some state agencies allow online direct deposit changes through claimant portals. Check your state’s official unemployment website for its procedure.
- Pension and retirement plan recipients: Depending on the plan, you may be able to update payment details through the plan administrator’s website or by submitting a form.
- Contractors and freelancers: Independent workers may change payment details through a client’s payment platform or billing system if that payer supports bank account updates.
Important: Do not assume every government benefit or retirement payment can be changed through the same website. Use the official portal of the organization sending your money, or contact its payment department to confirm the accepted process.
